Downsview - New eastern hub

Following the SEND review in Brighton and Hove, Cedar Centre will merge with Downs View School from September 2018.  The new school will provide education to a more diverse pupil population, and join up education, health and social care connected to a pupil's Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP)

New Build

An exciting part of the newly created Eastern Hub will be building and development works at the current Downs View site in Woodingdean.  Some great new spaces including a food technology area, trampolining room and more sensory spaces are to be created.

The new build will be completed by 2020, in preparation for the pupils to transfer to their new site.  Architect plans will be available to view here when they are published - we're working with the architect at the moment but there aren't any plans to share yet..

Pupils currently at the Cedar Centre site will stay on the Lynchet Close site until the new builds across both the Learning Disability Hubs and the SEMH hub are fully operational.

Transition

The staff and governors have been working together to ensure the merger brings benefits to the populations of both schools.  The leader of the new HUB will be Adrian Carver, current head teacher of Downsview School and Link College.

Staff have visited each others sites to gain a better understanding  of the pupils needs, the curriculum, and to begin the smooth process of transition.  A joint INSET day was held in April and another day is planned on June 15th to continue to develop an outstanding vision and provision for all the pupils and families.

We aim to share good practice and excellence from both schools to ensure the new school is so that we can be stronger together than our current separate schools.

Questions and queries

We understand that some families and pupils may be anxious about the change, and encourage you to contact either of the current school leaders if you have any issues you would like addressed: gayleadam@cedarcente.brighton-hove.sch.uk and adriancarver@downsview.brighton-hove.sch.uk . We want to assure you that we aim to address any issues that you may have as we move forwards together. We are here to offer the best education and preparation for adult life for your child that we possibly can, and that will always be our very highest priority.
